#tbt Johan Kriek beats John McEnroe to win the US Men’s Indoor

#throwbackthursday #tbt Tennis Indoor season is just around the corner. Here is a throwback to the 1982 U.S. Men’s Indoor National Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. Johan Kriek won the title beating John McEnroe in the final 6/3 3/6 6/4.

All together Johan and John McEnroe played each other over 20 times.
In his book “You Cannot be Serious,” John McEnroe described Johan as “one of the fastest human beings ever to step onto a tennis court.”

The last time Johan and John faced each other was at the 2010 Delray Beach Champions Tour event.

Daga Mrozek Kriek began playing tennis at the age of 9, in her native country, Poland, achieving the number 3 ranking in Juniors for three consecutive years. She has also excelled in collegiate tennis at Virginia Tech where she played for four years on a full athletic scholarship. She was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1996 and was a member of the Atlantic 10 Championship Team from 1996 to 1999.
